Hockey Canada Skills Academy
Sioux Mountain Public School
The Hockey Canada Skills Academy launched at the Sioux Mountain Public School in Sioux Lookout in the fall of 2015. This program was designed to improve skills such as teamwork, leadership, responsibility, perseverance, and problem solving. In addition, The Hockey Canada Skills Academy aims to promote healthy, active lifestyles, and to provide strategies to overcome life challenges and difficulties.
In 2016, we conducted a preliminary evaluation of the program. We reviewed students’ academic attendance, grades, and learning skills outcomes. We assessed students’ responses to a survey of their well-being. And lastly, we held interviews with teachers and coaches.
Overall, the program was viewed as a positive and valuable way to increase student motivation and confidence. Our evaluation included recommendations for the future to better improve student outcomes.
